HKU to host high level Croucher Foundation – Sponsored Advanced Workshop on Water Quality
03 Feb 2001
A high level workshop to explore recent advances in water quality and ecological modelling to provide better decision support tools for managing our nutrient rich coastal areas will be held at the University of Hong Kong from February 5-12, 2001.
The unique workshop, an Advanced Study Institute (ASI), is a high level inter-disciplinary teaching activity generously supported by the Croucher Foundation. It will provide an opportunity for a group of invited scientists, ecologists and engineers from different backgrounds to update and acquire new knowledge on this all-important topic. The emphasis is to develop the subject through lectures and close group interaction throughout the entire week.
The lecture and discussions will cover:
·the fate and transport of pollutants
·the physics of near shore and estuarine mixing processes
·outfall discharges
·coastal hydrodynamic and water quality modelling
·harmful algal blooms
·technology for impact and risk assessment
·fishfarm management
·hydro-biological interactions
·early warning systems
·data-driven methods for algal bloom forecasts
The opening ceremony will take place at 9.15am on Monday, February 5, 2001 at the Wang Gungwu Lecture Hall, University of Hong Kong, Main Campus.
Officiating guests will include Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor C.F. Lee, Mr. Rob Law, Director of Environmental Protection, of the Environmental Protection Department and Mr. M.K. Cheung, Assistant Director of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
