Professor Lai has been selected to receive this grant because of his research which has made him one of the world's leading experts in the area of chronic hepatitis B virus infections.
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation is a non-profit corporation that administers most of the philanthropic activities of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. The unrestricted biomedical research grants, which is one of the several programmes funded by the Foundation, gives Professor Lai the freedom to pursue any directions in which his work takes him.
Dr Richard Colonno, Chairman of Bristol-Myers Squibb Unrestricted Grant Programme in Infectious Diseases will attend the ceremony and present the award to Professor Lai Ching-lung. Professor Ian Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, will give a welcoming address while Professor Lai will give a presentation on his recent research on hepatitis B virus.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation is to present Professor Lai Ching-lung at the Department of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong with an unrestricted biomedical research grant of US$500,000 at a ceremony which will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2001.
