HKU launches the Institute for China and Global Development
04 Apr 2001
China's World Trade Organisation (WTO) membership is bringing profound changes to China and the world. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has launched the INSTITUTE FOR CHINA AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT (ICGD) in order to develop innovative research and training programmes focusing on China's interactions with the global economy.
As a multi-disciplinary focal point at HKU, ICGD, in partnership with well-known mainland and international institutions, will organise research and training programmes on China's economic, social, political and legal transitions arising from the deepening of its integration with the world market. Through the research and training programmes, ICDG will enhance both public and private sectors' understanding of the challenges for China and the rest of the world.
ICDG also serves as the University's home for the HONG KONG- SHANGHAI INSTITUTE FOR WORLD TRADE and CHINA DEVELOPMENT AND THE HONG KONG WORLD TRADE ORGANISATION (WTO) RESOURCE CENTRE.
HONG KONG- SHANGHAI INSTITUTE FOR WORLD TRADE is jointly organised by two leading universities, the University of Hong Kong and Fudan University, Shanghai, with the aim of fostering the initiation of joint teaching and research activities relating to China's WTO accession. It is expected to enhance the two universities' commitments to academic excellence and training of leaders for China and the world.
CHINA DEVELOPMENT AND THE HONG KONG WORLD TRADE ORGANISATION (WTO) RESOURCE CENTRE is supported by the WTO with the endorsement of the Hong Kong SAR government. First of its kind in Hong Kong, the Centre is set up to promote a better understanding of the world trade regime in Hong Kong and the region. The Centre's collection of publications and relevant resources is housed in the Libraries of the University of Hong Kong.
