Three HKU Students to Receive Lufthansa Scholarships
08 May 2001
Three students of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) are to be presented with Lufthansa Scholarships at a presentation ceremony on Friday, May 11, 2001 at Room 902, Knowles Building, the University of Hong Kong at 11:00am.
Lufthansa German Airlines, in cooperation with HKU, has established the Lufthansa Scholarships since 1997 in the form of free air tickets for Year II students who have enrolled in German degree courses at the Language Centre at the University. The Scholarship generously supports the students of HKU who have obtained excellent academic results in studying German and encourages cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Germany.
HKU's Language Centre encourages students studying German to spend at least four weeks in the summer of their second year at a German university. This scholarship will allow those, who may not otherwise be able to afford a longer stay in Europe, a chance to expand their language skills. It will also allow them to apply the skills they have acquired in class to real-life situations.
Lufthansa is Germany's largest international carrier, serving more than 349 destinations in over 94 countries. For this summer, Lufthansa German Airlines is giving out three round trip economy air tickets from Hong Kong to Frankfurt (plus one additional destination with Germany) to Year 2 degree students of German in recognition of their academic performance.
Acting Director of HKU's Language Centre, Dr M R Martin, will preside at the ceremony. Mr Juergen Thomsen, General Manager of Lufthansa German Airlines will also attend the ceremony and present the scholarships.
Reporters and photographers are cordially invited to attend the presentation ceremony.
