HKU Careers Education and Placement Centre conducted the annual employment survey in late November 2000. Among the 2,748 graduates, 94% of them responded to the survey. This must be regarded as a very good response rate.
According to the survey, about 1% of the graduates did not find a job due to personal reasons or they were leaving Hong Kong. Over 98% of the graduates had either secured employment or pursued further studies. Only less than 1% of them had so far not been successful in securing employment.
94% of those who were employed secured their job offers within three months after finishing the final examinations, while 48% of them received job offers before the final examinations. From the figures, one may surprise that it has been easier for graduates to find jobs this year.
Apart from the fact that graduates secured jobs earlier than in last year, 66% of the employed graduates received more than one job offer, which represents a 4% increase from the previous year, and the average number of job offers is 2.4 jobs per graduate.
"Commerce and Industry" remains the largest employment sector for new graduates, accounting for 66% of the cohort, followed by Community, Social & Personal Services (20%), Education (9.4%), and the Civil Service (4.8%).
Among the graduates, a few of them are earning much more than average, eg, a Sales Representative at HK$74,967 per month, a Financial Analyst at HK$62,167 per month and a Trainee Solicitor at HK$41,000 per month, but these are very exceptional cases. Salaries for graduates working as Computer Programmer or Analyst showed a significant increase of 20% compared with those of the previous year, amounting to an average of HK$15,100 per month, with the highest salary at HK$30,000 per month.
HKU is optimistic about the employment situation for the cohort of graduates for the year 2001. About 100 Fortune Global 500 and Hong Kong Publicly Listed companies have recruited from HKU. Although most employers are still in the process of interviewing students, 12 Fortune and Publicly Listed companies have already completed their selection processes. Among the total of 73 offers made by these companies, over half (37) were secured by HKU graduating students, with the rest shared by other local universities. This indicates that HKU graduates are highly competitive and sought after by employers.
A press meeting will be held in mid June to provide further information about the employment situation of HKU graduates. Students and graduates will also be invited to answer questions relating to their job search and work experience.
