The University Teaching Fellowship Awards and Outstanding Researchers Awards represent HKU's commitment to recognizing and rewarding good teaching and research. The Outstanding Researchers Awards comprise four categories, viz, the Distinguished Research Achievement Award, the Outstanding Researcher Award, the Outstanding Young Researcher Award and the Outstanding Research Supervisor Award, tailored for teachers at different stages of their career development. The Distinguished Research Achievement Awards this year goes to Professor Yash Ghai of Department of Law and Professor S T Fan of Department of Surgery. Five teachers from various departments will receive appointments as University Teaching Fellows.
This year, two professors receive more than one award. Professor T H Lam, of the Department of Community Medicine, is to be honoured as a Teaching Fellow and as an Outstanding Research Supervisor. Similarly, Professor L P Samaranayake, of Faculty of Dentistry, is to receive the Awards of Outstanding Researcher and Outstanding Research Supervisor.
On the same occasion, the University will award SEDA graduates Certificates in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in recognition of their teaching excellence. Four HKU's academics have completed a programme that is developed by the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CAUT) and have received the SEDA Certificate of Accreditation. The programme, which is registered with the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) in the United Kingdom, aims to promote a rigorous approach to the improvement of teaching and learning and to provide an opportunity for academic staff to acquire professional accreditation as university teachers. HKU is the only tertiary institution in Hong Kong that is a member of SEDA.
