Dr Li will take up his position on October 1, 2001. Dr Li has a long association with the University and has been Treasurer since 1990. He is also Deputy Chairman of the Council and Chairman of the University's Finance Committee. In 1996 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Hong Kong in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong's economy.
For Dr Yang, his resignation will close another chapter in his long involvement with the University. Earlier this year he retired as Chairman of the Council, a position he had held since 1985. Dr Yang at that time had expressed a wish to relinquish the Pro-Chancellorship as soon as a suitable successor was found to follow in his footstep. With the agreement of Dr Li to accept the position, he believes that the opportune moment has arrived.
The University spokesman welcomed Dr Li's appointment, pointing out that Dr Li's longstanding association with this University and vast experiences as a legislator and banker will certainly benefit the future development of the University. At the same time, the University acknowledged its deep debt of gratitude to Dr Yang for his dedication and commitment to the life and work of the University over the last quarter of a century.
