In a talk entitled "Beyond the Physics of Queueing", Professor Richard C Larson from MIT will explore the Queueing Theory, which was borned in 1915 in Denmark. The theory has blossomed in recent years with numerous applications in telecommunications, retailing, traffic flows, theme parks, and more. However, most of the effort of researchers has been on the mathematics of queues, attempting to discover the physics of queues as recorded by strictly quantitative performance measures. In this talk Professor Larson will extend that to the psychology and sociology of queues. He finds that efforts aimed solely at reducing mean waiting times are often misplaced and that other issues such as queue environment, social fairness and feedback about anticipated delays are more important. Some current problems such as "queue rage" and its enactment in automobiles as expressed in "road rage" will also be included.
Professor Richard C Larson is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Center for Advanced Educational Services at MIT.
Mr Ronald Joseph Arculli, Chairman of Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council will give an opening remark.
The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund lecture will be held at 6pm in the Rayson Huang Theatre on the University of Hong Kong's main estate on April 23, 2002. The lecture will be conducted in English. Press and public are cordially invited to attend.
