The scholarship, entitled the Electrical Energy Systems Engineering Scholarship, was established and first awarded in 1992. This is the occasion on which 11 scholarships will be awarded by the industrial sector as an encouragement to students with outstanding academic merits.
The award-winning students are postgraduate research students and those studying in the first, second and third years of a degree course in Electrical Energy Systems Engineering. The course aims to meet the territory's urgent need for skilled staff in the power supply, building services, electrical transport and service industries and also government agencies.
The course, first introduced in 1991 as a stream, became a separate BEng degree course in 1992 in response to the tremendous developments in electrical energy systems technology. Its special features are a substantially increased content of high-tech subjects and a much broader scope in electrical energy related technologies. It also includes a strengthening of environmental and management studies. It has an emphasis on the application of electronic, computer and communication technologies to electrical energy systems and devices.
The course is fully accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Thus the graduates of the course have received full recognition from the government and professional bodies for their future career development, also recognition from the Washington Accord signatory countries including USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
The scholarships are donated by Clipsal Asia Ltd., The Hongkong Electric Co. Ltd., Johnson Electric Industrial Manufactory Ltd., Junefair Engineering Co. Ltd., Meinhardt (M & E) Ltd. and Yook Tong Electric Co. Ltd. In addition to donating scholarships to the University, Hong Kong industry has offered training and employment for students on graduation.
HK's Industrial Sector continues to give Scholarships and Prizes for HKU Electrical Energy Systems Engineering Degree Students

Leading Hong Kong companies continue to give scholarships of $10,000 each to 11 outstanding students studying in the degree course, Electrical Energy Systems Engineering (EESE), at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). A Scholarships Presentation Ceremony was held today (April 26, 2002) at the Kong Siu Luey Hall, Robert Black College, the University of Hong Kong. Professor C C Chan, the Honda Professor of Engineering and the Founder of the scholarship hosted the Ceremony and the Reception.
