The building project is a major estate development for both the University and the Faculty of Medicine, with a budget of HK$1,568 million. The foundation works began in 1998 and the superstructure construction started in July 1999. The University Grants Committee (UGC) allocated HK$1,128 million to fund the pre-clinical complex while The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust donated HK$270 million for the construction of the 7,200m2 Clinical Research Centre.
The Faculty of Medicine Building provides a gross floor area of 48,250m2. There are two blocks within the complex, the block which houses the Hong Kong Jockey Club Clinical Research Centre, two floors of Dean's Laboratory, and the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology is named the Laboratory Block.
The other block which houses the Departments of Community Medicine, and Nursing Studies, the Faculty Office, Yu Chun Keung Medical Library and the Conference Centre is name the Academic and Administration Block.

The Chief Executive the Honourable Tung Chee Hwa will officiate at the grand opening ceremony for its Faculty of Medicine Building on Monday, April 29, 2002.
