Dr Supachai has held a range of positions in former Thailand governments. Since 1997, Dr Supachai has served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce of Thailand and has been actively involved in international trade, playing an instrumental role in the drafting of Thailand's major economic policies, including the national economic and social development plans. He will succeed the Right Honourable Mike Moore of New Zealand to be the Director-General of WTO from September 1, 2002.

WTO Director-General Designate to speak at HKU

Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, the Director-General Designate of the World Trade Organisation will deliver a public lecture at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Rayson Huang Theatre of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). The lecture, entitled “Business Expectation from the Doha Round”, belongs to the Global Dimensions Lecture series of the Global Dimensions progamme at the London School of Economics and Political Science. HKU’s Institute for the China and Global Development co-organises the lecture.
