Research in Hong Kong and elsewhere have found that effective learning through project work depends crucially on whether collaborative knowledge building takes place. Further, the use of appropriate internet-based collaborative knowledge building tools would be extremely useful in supporting such learning activities. Currently, a UGC funded school-university interface project is undertaken by CITE to promote knowledge building through project-based learning. The focus of the Symposium and Workshops is to share the experiences and good practices that have evolved from such local and overseas experiences.
The Symposium will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 9:00 a.m. at the Academic Hall, Hong Kong Baptist University. Dr. K.K. Chan, Assistant Director of Education, Curriculum Development Institute, will deliver a theme speech on “Curriculum Reform and New Learning Culture in Schools”. Two renowned scholars in this area, Professor Carl Bereiter and Professor Marlene Scardamalia of OISE, University of Toronto, will present keynote speeches to share overseas experiences.
The dates and venues for the Symposium and Workshops are as follows:

A Symposium On Group Collaborative Knowledge Building Activities(Press Invitation)
17 May 2002
The Centre for Information Technology in School and Teacher Education (CITE) at the Faculty of Education, HKU, and the Curriculum Development Institute of the Education Department is to hold a “Knowledge Building Symposium and Workshops” between May 18-25, 2002 to enhance the knowledge-building abilities and problem-solving skills of teachers by participating in group collaborative learning activities. A series of workshops are tailor-made for teachers in different subject streams to enhance their skills in conducting knowledge-building activities for their students.
