From 1999 to 2002, a total of 90 outstanding students from major mainland China universities were admitted to the University of Hong Kong -- 28 students were admitted in 1999, 30 in 2000 and 32 in 2001. In the fourth year of the scheme, the University has recruited 34 mainland students for the academic year 2002-2003, including 10 students from Fudan University, 6 from Nanjing University, 8 from Peking University and 10 from Tsinghua University. The students are supported by scholarships from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Drs. Richard Charles and Esther Yewpick Lee Charitable Foundation.
The first batch of mainland students will graduate in summer 2002 and a farewell gathering is scheduled for Thursday, June 6, 2002 at 6:00pm at the Rayson Huang Theatre of the University of Hong Kong. Members of the press are cordially invited to cover the event. The University of Hong Kong Farewells the First Batch of Mainland Undergraduate Students

In 1998, the Recruitment Scheme for the Outstanding Undergraduate Students from the mainland was first introduced in Hong Kong. The 1st batch of mainland undergraduate students was admitted to the University of Hong Kong in the following year.
