Jointly organized by the HKU's Centre for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID) and the Information Technology Services Department (ITSD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the forum is expected to generate wide interest among businesses, governments and society in the benefits of standardization.
Speaking at a press conference to introduce the forum today, the Director of CECID, Dr David Cheung Wai-lok, said that as an international trading and logistics hub, Hong Kong is well placed to take the lead the development of such standards.
"We have a very strong attendance for the forum from various industries, which really testifies to the interest expressed in standardization," said Dr Cheung.
Mr Alan Wong Chi-kong, the Director of Information Technology Services, said that innovative technologies could only operate on the basis of common and generally accepted business and technical standards. “For e-business collaboration to succeed, business stakeholders must first agree on their common practices and processes, plus data standards and technical standards,” he said.
"The Forum certainly comes at the right time to enlighten us on the latest development with regard to e-business standards. It will give us more insight into how the local industry and business sectors could achieve these goals," Mr Wong added.
Also introducing various aspects and examples of standardization today were Mr Jon Bosak, who chairs the OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards)'s Universal Business Language Technical Committee; Mr David Brock, Principal Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-Founder and Director of the Auto-ID Center (now EPCglobal, Inc. and Auto-ID Laboratories), United States of America; and Mr Stephen Miles, Broadband Internet Protocol Services Consultant, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Auto-ID Laboratories, United States of America.
The forum will be held on tomorrow (Friday, May 14) at 2:15 p.m. at the Wang Gungwu Lecture Hall, Graduate House, University of Hong Kong. Details are available at www.cecid.hku.hk/forum/aboutforum.html .
