In response to government's consideration of publicizing building classification based on health and safety performance, Prof. KW Chau, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Dr. Daniel Ho, Associate Professor of the Department and Real Estate and Construction carried out initial screening of buildings and assigned performance grades in the study “Building Quality Index". Once publicized, this building classification becomes a reference of potential property prices and urban renewal priorities, thus providing financial incentives for property developers and building owners to improve building performance.
Prof. KW Chau and Dr. Daniel Ho will present their research findings at a press briefing this week. Details of the press briefing are :
Date: September 1, 2005 (Thursday)
Time: 4pm to 5pm

The First Building Index to Assess Building Health and Safety Unveiled by HKU's Real Estate Experts
29 Aug 2005
For the first time, researchers from the University of Hong Kong came up with performance indicators to assess the safety and health standards of residential buildings. A study in the Yau Tsim Mong district suggests that having management companies or owners’ incorporations is a more important driving force towards better building health and safety than improving building design.
