Time:4:30pm–5:30pm
Venue: University Museum and Art Gallery, 1/F, T.T. Tsui Building, Pokfulam Road, The University of Hong Kong.
This day witnesses the celebration of the turnover of The C. C. Liu Collection to the University of Hong Kong Libraries by Professor Liu Ching-chih, and the launching of our new book “New Music in China and The C. C. Liu Collection at the University of Hong Kong” edited and compiled by Mrs. Helen Woo, in association with Dr. Chan Hing-yan, and Dr. Georg Predota. This ceremony will also serve as the kick-off event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Music.
Professor Liu, currently Honorary Professor and Honorary Research Fellow at The Centre of Asian Studies at the University of Hong Kong, was appointed Research Fellow by The Centre of Asian Studies at the University of Hong Kong in 1981. In his ingenious manner, he collected a vast array of invaluable materials by organizing nine seminars and seven supplementary seminars on New Music in China between 1985 and 1999. His collection contains musical materials covering the entire period of New Music or Westernized music in China. Its strength resides in materials related to music of the Sino-Japanese Conflict from 1937-1945 and the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Many of these materials are not commercially available and unique in Hong Kong. This is possibly the largest collection of materials on New Music in China in private hands in Hong Kong prior to the turnover to the University of Hong Kong Libraries.
The new book is not a standard catalogue. Part A comprises five invited papers, each of which touches on a topic directly or indirectly to the music of China of the twentieth century by Professor Barbara Mittler, Modern China Chair at the Institute of Chinese Studies of the University of Heidelberg; Mrs. Helen Woo, Music Librarian; Dr. Chan Hing-yan, Head, Department of Music, University of Hong Kong; Dr.Yu Siu-wah, Associate Professor with the Department of Music of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Professor Harrison Ryker who recently retired from the Department of Music of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The inclusion of these articles will no doubt elevate the scholastic value of this publication.
Part B consists of the catalogue of library materials related to new music of China donated by Professor Liu. It comprises 5 sections - scores; books and ephemera; manuscripts; audio-visual materials and journals.
An exhibition of the representative works of The C. C. Liu Collection and a mini-concert (about 30 minutes) will also be held.
