The officiating guest of the opening ceremony will be Mr. Xu Guan Hua, Minister of Science and Technology, the People's Republic of China. Dr. York Chow, Secretary for Health Welfare and Food, Dr. P.Y. Lam, Director of Health, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, HKU's Vice-Chancellor, Chair of Scientific Board of State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases, Professor Nan-shan Zhong, as well as Professor Paul Tam, HKU's Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Steering Committee Chairman of the State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (HKU), Professor Kwok-Yung Yuen and Dr Yi Guan from HKU's Department of Microbiology, Dr. Li-Hai Tan, Associate Professor of HKU's Department of Linguistics and Professor Kwok-Fai So, Head of HKU's Department of Anatomy, will be present at the ceremony among various guests.
Both state-level laboratories are the FIRST and ONLY in their respective fields located outside of Mainland. The state key laboratories at HKU will conduct research on emerging diseases, such as SARS and avian influenza, as well as interdisciplinary research on human cognition and neurosciences respectively.
Prior to the opening ceremony, a press briefing will be arranged for well-known experts and professors to introduce the work of the laboratories, followed by a press tour of the laboratory.

HKU to Open Two State Key Laboratories of Emerging Infectious Diseases & Brain and Cognitive Sciences

The University of Hong Kong is to announce operation of both the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases and the newly established State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (HKU) at an opening ceremony that will be held on October 4, 2005 (Tuesday).
