The main objective of such a partnership is to seek complementarity and reciprocal engagement of each institution's academic distinctiveness and professional experience by establishing a basis for the sharing of resources in artistic, research and pedagogical activities.

Department of Music, The University of Hong Kong
The Department of Music was founded in 1981 and is part of the Faculty of Arts, one of the three founding faculties of the University. A highly-qualified and experienced faculty offers a BA programme to about 60 undergraduate music majors and over 400 non-majors, and MPhil and PhD programmes to more than 15 postgraduate students.
The Department has long excelled in teaching as well as research. Its curriculum is unique in that it is designed around issues, methodologies and topics, and reflects Hong Kong's distinctive cultural character. The Department is one of the two highest-scored departments at HKU in the UGC Research Assessment Exercise in 1999, with each and every faculty member meeting the active researcher designation. Research projects, completed or ongoing, cover a wide range of topics, including manuscript study, avant-garde music in 20th-century Europe, traditional music and performance practices in China and Asia, Cantonese opera, music and gender,film music, and commercial and popular music. School of Music, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts
The Academy School of Music provides comprehensive and performance focused training for students who aspire to become professional performers, composers or teachers of music. It offers full-time tertiary programmes in Western and Chinese instrumental music performance, Western opera, composition and electronic music. Currently there are around 200 full-time students in the various study programmes. The School prides itself on an intimate community spirit with personal attention for all students, and in an integrated curriculum that relates academic studies to performance. Regular visits by distinguished performers and teachers from around the world help to keep the students in touch with international standards. The School of Music organises around 300 performances each year. About 200 of these are programmed within the Academy and the rest in Hong Kong and various overseas venues. Music students of the Academy have won prizes in many international competitions and been invited to perform in various arts festivals in Europe, Asia and the USA. HKU & HKAPA Join Hands in Music Education

The Department of Music of the University of Hong Kong and The School of Music of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts has collaborated on a number of artistic and pedagogical activities in recent years. As a concrete step to foster an even deeper collaboration in music education, the heads of the two institutions will sign a partnership agreement to formalise the friendly relationship we have enjoyed.
