Since the establishment in 1980, HKU's Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management has become a centre of excellence for urban and environmental postgraduate education and training and research. The Centre offers postgraduate programmes in Urban Planning, Environmental Management, Transport Policy and Planning, Housing Management and Corporate Environmental Governance. An extensive research programme focusing on sustainable urban and regional development issues in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta Region is also offered.
Over the years about 1,200 students have completed taught postgraduate courses offered by the Centre and 39 students have obtained MPhil or PhD degree. There is now a taught postgraduate community of approximately 250 students and the Centre runs an active PhD programme. Currently there are 25 Ph.D. and M.Phil research students. Students are able work with a wide range of the University's staff that have expertise in urban and environmental issues.

Background of Professor Sir Peter Hall
Peter Hall is Professor of Planning at the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College London. From 1991-94 he was Special Adviser on Strategic Planning to the Secretary of State for the Environment. He was member of the Deputy Prime Minister's Urban Task Force (1998-1999). He has received the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for distinction in research and is a Fellow of the British Academy. He was a founder member of the Regional Studies Association and first editor of its journal Regional Studies. He was Chairman of the Town and Country Planning Association (1995-1999).

This year marks the 25th anniversary of HKU's Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management, to commemorate this special occasion, several events are organized.
