Entitled "Prior, Context and Interactive Computer Vision", the lecture will take place at 5:30-7:00pm on Monday, May 15, 2006, at Lecture Theatre A, Chow Yei Ching Building, The University of Hong Kong (HKU).
For many years, computer vision researchers have worked hard to incorporate prior knowledge and contextual information into vision systems. In his lecture, Dr Shum will share the proposition that many difficult vision tasks can only be solved with interactive vision systems, by combining powerful and real-time vision techniques with intuitive and clever user interfaces. Two interactive vision systems that Dr Shum's has developed recently, namely Lazy Snapping (Siggraph 2004) and Image Completion (Siggraph 2005) will be shown. Also, Dr. Shum will give a quick overview of Microsoft Research Asia, 'the world's hottest computer lab' (MIT Technology Review, June 2004), and outline its activities in basic research, technology transfer, product incubation, technology licensing, university relations and internship programme.
Dr Shum is a Distinguished Engineer of Microsoft Corporation. He received his M.Phil. from HKU's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1991, and was elected a Swire Scholar of Robert Black College of HKU during 1989-1991. He holds a Ph.D. in robotics from the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University. After he graduated, he worked as a researcher at Microsoft Research Redmond. In 1999, he moved to Microsoft Research Asia (Beijing, China) where he is currently the Managing Director.
Members of the press and interested parties are cordially invited to attend. For enquiries, please contact Elsie Leung of HKU's External Relations Office at 2859 2600.
