Entitled "A Nostalgic Look at the Development of OLED Technology", the lecture will take place at 5:30 - 7:00pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Lecture Theatre A, Chow Yei Ching Building, The University of Hong Kong (HKU).
OLED have received considerable attention due to their superb display image quality and demonstrated manufacturing and market potentials. In this presentation, Professor Chen will review the past and present development of key OLED material science and device technology from the vintage point of view of one of the co-investors back in the Display Research Laboratory of Eastman Kodak Company. Future development trend in technology and opportunities for Hong Kong and Greater China will also be presented.
Professor Chen obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1971 from Oklahoma State University in the United States. In 1973, he joined Eastman Kodak Company and engaged in the design and synthesis of optoelectronic materials and the development of various digital imaging technologies. His significant contributions to OLED technology commenced in 1980 when he and Dr C W Tang jointly invented the doped emitter technology, leading the path to the development of full-colour OLED displays. Professor Chen has been awarded more than 36 US patents, and credited with the invention and co-invention of many key OLED materials. After leaving Kodak Research Laboratories after 25 years of distinguished service, Professor Chen turned his attention to teaching and the promotion of OLED industries in Taiwan with the appointment of a chair-professor in National Chiao Tung University in 1999. He later assumed the directorship of the OLED Laboratory at the Display Institute, leading the effort of OLED materials and device research and technology development in the University. He has produced an impressive number of scholarly output which includes a recent book entitled OLED Materials and Devices, written in Chinese for the benefit of a vast and growing community of researchers in Taiwan and Greater China. Professor Chen has just been awarded a Society for Information Display (SID) Fellow in 2006 for his contribution in education and the promotion of OLED display technology.
Member of the press and interested parties are cordially invited to attend. For enquiries, please contact Elsie Leung of HKU's External Relations Office at 2859 2600 or Eunice Chan or Mr. Patrick Tai of HKU Faculty of Engineering at 2857-8520.
