At the ceremony, 38 postgraduate students will be awarded with prizes, including four students for the Li Ka Shing Prize (2003-2005), 10 students for the Awards for Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student (2004-2005) and 24 students for the University Studentship Awards (2006-2007). Prizes are awarded based on quality of the thesis submitted and academic performance.
The Li Ka Shing Prize was established in 1990 by a generous donation from Dr Li Ka Shing to award postgraduate students on the basis of academic excellence of their theses. The Prize is awarded every two years to four postgraduate degree graduates from two broad groups: arts and humanities, and science and engineering. With each group, one Prize is awarded to an MPhil graduate, another to a PhD graduate.

HKU Graduate School Research Student Orientation Programme cum Prize Presentation Ceremony 2006

The University of Hong Kong's Graduate School will hold an orientation programme for new research students and present the Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student Awards and Li Ka Shing Prizes. Professor Anthony Yeh, Dean of Graduate School, will give a welcoming speech and Professor Paul Tam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, will present the awards. Professor GA Postiglione from HKU Faculty of Education will give a talk entitled "undertaking graduate study in a changing university and a globalized world".
