Established under the Faculty of Arts in HKU, the School contributes to the diverse learning environment on campus as well as off campus. The School offers programmes in American, European and Japanese Studies as well as nine languages including Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Thai. Students have opportunities to undergo 1-year exchange programmes in Japan, Germany, France, and other European countries, as well as internships in France and Japanese corporations in Hong Kong eg Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Japan Airlines and Mitsui & Co.
"German October" is a series of cultural events presented by the School and the Global Lounge, co-organised with HKU Office of International Exchange and the German Association (student association) with sponsorship from German National Tourist Office, German Wine Society Hong Kong and Bayern Gourmet Food Company Limited.

Inauguration ceremony for HKU School of Modern Languages and Cultures & Opening of German October

Internationalization in The University of Hong Kong (HKU) reaches new heights. An inauguration ceremony for the newly established HKU School of Modern Languages and Cultures will be held on 29 September 2006. Following the ceremony will be a live performance by Aristo Sham who is the 10-year-old gifted pianist & winner of the Ettlingen International Piano Competition for Young Pianists 2006. The performance marks the Opening of "German October" which is the first of four international festivals that the School will co-organize with HKU Global Lounge throughout the year. Various Consul-generals & prominent guests from the business sector will be present to witness this joyful moment.
