Professor Ian Buruma is Henry R. Luce Professor of Democracy, Human Rights and Journalism at Bard College, New York. He is also a journalist and a columnist. During the Lecture, the speaker will talk about why World War II still casts such dark shadows over East Asia, whereas in Europe the problem with Germany seems to have been resolved.

In 2003, the Fan family generously donated over HK$2 million to the Faculty's Social Science Endowment Fund. The Fund is used to support an annual SC Fan Memorial Lecture to be delivered by world-renowned scholars and experts to address contemporary issues of major social and public significance and to promote informed dialogues and debates on such issues in Hong Kong. It also supports educational, research and community activities of the Faculty.

The S. C. Fan Memorial Lecture entitled "East Asian Conflicts: The Dark Shadows of History" will be delivered by Professor Ian Buruma at 6:30pm on Monday, October 23, 2006 at Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library, Causeway Bay. The lecture is organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong in memory of the former Dean, Dr S. C. Fan, from 1981 – 1989.
