Sustainable and Safe Water Supplies International Symposium at HKU
12 Jan 2007
A stable and safe water supply is essential to mankind. Though Hong Kong has one of the best water systems in the world, long-term issues such as water reuse and management, deteriorating quality of water resources, Pearl River water resources management, ecological management of East River, saline drinking water threat and sanitation technology should not be overlooked as industrialization and urbanization in the region increase. The way other countries deal with these issues may provide insights to help us face these challenges in the future.
An international symposium is to be held at HKU on "sustainable and safe water supplies" which is one of the key strategic research themes for the University. The 2-day symposium will be opened by Dr the Honourable Sarah Liao, JP, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works of the HKSAR Government in the presence of Professor Paul Tam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, and various renowned academics and professionals. At the symposium, international experts from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Australia, USA, Germany and Hong Kong will share their expertise in water conservation and reuse, water resource management and environmental policy, river basin ecological status and toxic/pathogen detection technology.
The symposium is sponsored by Environment, Transport and Works Bureau of the HKSAR Government, Water Supplies Department of the HKSAR Government, The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers-Environmental Divison, The Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management-Hong Kong, International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research – HK Chapter and The International Water Association Regional Committee of Hong Kong, China.
