Community-HKU Partnership in Natural Conservation - Opening of Lung Fu Shan Hiking Trail
28 Jul 2007
The opening of the Lung Fu Shan hiking trail adjacent to the campus of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (July 28) signifies not only HKU's concerns towards community integration, but also its emphasis towards environmental sustainability. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Professor Jim Chi-yung, representative of HKU's Centennial Campus Project Group, said being a part of the Central and Western community, HKU has a keen concern on the health and well being of its residents. Thus, HKU is devoted to ensure that its Centennial Campus construction works have little impact onto the access, via HKU campus, to the Lung Fu Shan Country Park, which is a popular leisure spot for community members in the District. The building of the new hiking trail linkage is a result of consultation with residents and hikers, demonstrating effective university-community partnership., Mr Chan Tak-chor, Chairman of the Central & Western District Council, said he hoped the continuous town-gown partnership would become an exemplary model for Hong Kong on the benefits of integrating the community's inputs from the very beginning of various projects. Mr Chan Sheung-kuen, chairman of the Lung Fu Shan Country Park Morning Walkers' Association, said he was strongly confident that HKU's expertise in and determination towards natural conservation would benefit both the environment and the perpetual well being of the community.
Professor Jim said as the HKU Centennial Campus would be built on consciousness of environmental, ecological, sustainability and heritage issues, upon its completion, the Western District would have a green oasis in the city. The new "University District" would also provide the lots of public facilities, open spaces and more lifelong learning opportunities for community members.
Lung Fu Shan Country Park Occupying a site of 47 hectares, the Lung Fu Shan Country Park, due to its proximity to urban areas and with a 400-metre trail, is one of the most popular morning hiking sites in HK. Its major attractions also make it a popular venue for visitors in all seasons. The Pinewood Battery, remains of an old military fort built in 1903, located on a knoll of 307 metres above sea level in Lung Fu Shan, is the highest and most well preserved outdoor defense facility of its kind. The Country Park also has a wide range of leisure facilities, like picnic and barbecue sites, fitness walkway and equipments, tea-making tools and planting sites.
Lung Fu Shan's lush woodlands feed more than 150 bird species. Occasionally, porcupines and squirrels would be found. With the government's efforts, lots of native trees of various species are also planted in the Country Park.
Lung Fu Shan Country Park Morning Walkers' Association Established in December 1999, the non-profit-making Association aims to promote healthy lifestyle and natural conservancy for Lung Fu Shan. The Association of more than 300 members has also played exemplary roles in building good partnership with various government departments towards bettering the facilities, environment and security of Lung Fu Shan. Other than promoting healthy hiking activities, its members also work on the planting site in the Country Park, which has over 100 types of Chinese medicinal plants and serves as an educational site for students and the public.
At present, senior members of the Association are working on the feasibility of linking the Lung Fu Shan hiking trail with a Mount Davies old trail, which they have re-discovered recently after more than a year's trial-and-error exploratory walks.
