Harvard's Professor Arthur Kleinman speaks on Caregiving: A Biosocial Approach to Health and Other Human Catastrophes

Professor Arthur Kleinman is one of the world's leading researchers in cross-cultural psychiatry and global mental health, and a major figure in medical anthropology and social medicine. At the Lecture, Professor Kleinman will examine the reality of health and other human catastrophes and describe what caregiving is about. In addition, he will use cross-cultural examples to illustrate his points of view on modern caregiving and how to develop a social theory of caregiving which he takes to be a crucial contribution of the social sciences and humanities.

In 2003, the Fan family generously donated over HK$2 million to the Faculty's Social Science Endowment Fund. The Fund is used to support an annual S.C. Fan Memorial Lecture, in memory of the former Dean, Dr. S.C. Fan (1981-1989), to be delivered by world-renowned scholars and experts to address contemporary issues of major social and public significance and to promote informed dialogues and debates on such issues in Hong Kong. It also supports educational, research and community activities of the Faculty.
