A conference entitled "Mediation in Hong Kong: The Way Forward", jointly organized by the Faculty of Law of The University of Hong Kong, the Judiciary, the Department of Justice, the Bar Association, the Law Society, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Hong Kong Mediation Centre and the Hong Kong Mediation Council, will be held on Friday, 30 November and Saturday, 1 December 2007.
The Hon Mr Justice Andrew Li, Chief Justice of the HKSAR, and Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice Chancellor of HKU, will officiate at the Opening Ceremony of the Mediation Conference at 9:30 am on 30 November.
The Hon Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC, the Secretary for Justice, will address the Conference Luncheon at 12:30 pm on 30 November.
The Hon Mr Tsang Tak Sing, the Secretary for Home Affairs, will also give welcoming remarks at the conference on the second day (December 1 at 9:30am).
Mediation provides parties in dispute with a more efficient and inexpensive method in resolving disputes. Preservation of a relationship of the parties is also a significant feature of this dispute resolution method, as opposed to litigation. The Mediation Conference seeks to provide an opportunity for a comparative study of mediation practices and experience in Hong Kong and other jurisdictions, and to promote a wider use of mediation in Hong Kong. It will also look at future mediation trends in both the private and public sectors.
Speakers of this conference include mediation experts from Australia, Canada, Europe and USA, as well as local mediation experts covering a wide range of sectors, including business, commerce and finance, professional bodies, labour groups, statutory bodies, government departments and NGOs.
