HKU International Students learn Chinese Culture amidst Lunar New Year Fun
05 Feb 2008
With the approaching of the Lunar New Year, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been treating international students with festive fun.
Under the guidance of Professor Sin Chow-Yiu of HKU's School of Chinese, over 100 students from overseas and the Mainland learnt and practised Chinese calligraphy together in writing lucky New Year greetings in traditional Red Couplets (Hui Chun) yesterday (February 4). Some foreign beginners demonstrated their writing talents and mastery of brushes with ease. Others supplemented their writing with imaginative drawings! Professor Sin, who is also Hon-Yin and Suet-Fong Chan Endowed Professor, and Dr Abraham Chan also gave a brief lesson to introduce Chinese culture and Chinese linguistics to the students.
They were then treated by a traditional Chinese Reunion Dinner, followed by a must-do HK-style shopping at the Victoria Park Lunar New Year Bazaar.
Being a global university, HKU has a very culturally diverse population on campus. It has nearly 3,000 international students from 58 countries. It also has student exchange programmes with over 180 partner institutions in 25 countries worldwide.
