Hong Kong Success Stories: Why They Matter? - A Dialogue by Professor Leo Goodstadt and Dr Hung Ching-tin

Professor Leo Goodstadt and Dr Hung Ching-tin will have a dialogue at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) next Monday (March 17) to discuss the success and problems of Hong Kong.
They will present conflicting views of the creation of a Hong Kong identity which is thoroughly Chinese in its cultural loyalties, British in its government and legal systems and thoroughly global as an economy. They will also discuss the importance of these historical issues in dealing with the challenges that currently face Hong Kong and its rulers.

About the Speakers
Both are Honorary Research Fellows of HKU's Centre of Asian Studies.
Professor Leo Goodstadt, head of the HK government's Central Policy Unit in 1989-97, is Adjunct Professor in the School of Business Studies, Trinity College, Dublin. His academic research has investigated the economic failings of colonial rule and the weaknesses of a business-dominated political system. His most recent books are Uneasy Partners: The Conflict between Public Interest and Private Profit in Hong Kong (2005) and Profits, Politics and Panics: Hong Kong's Banks and the Making of a Miracle Economy, 1935-1985 (2007).
Dr Hung Ching Tin is a specialist in Hong Kong studies and has published ten books on the making of modern Hong Kong. His special focus has been on the East-West legacy which has shaped the region's unique multi-institutional system and its special identity. He was awarded his doctorate degree from Wuhan University.
