Ann Hui is an internationally renowned film director who has played a paramount role in the history of Hong Kong cinema. She is an alumna of the Faculty of Arts and a graduate from English and Comparative Literature of our university. She is a prolific filmmaker, having produced more than 20 films. Her films include "The Secret" (1979), "Love in a Fallen City" (1984), "Song of the Exile" (1990), "Summer Snow" (1995), "Ordinary Heroes" (1999), "July Rhapsody" (2002) and the recent award-winning work "The Postmodern Life of My Aunt" (2007) as well as her latest film "The Way We Are" (2008). We have successfully organized the first public forum "An Evening with Postmodern Auntie" on the tradition of realism in Hong Kong cinema on 12 March 2008. The speakers were Mr. Shum Long Tin and Mr. Bryan Chang, both film critics from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society (HKFCS), and Dr. Esther M.K. Cheung from the Department of Comparative Literature, HKU. During her residency at HKU, she has been meeting students, colleagues and the general public to broaden our scope of horizon in film studies.
Set in Tin Shui Wai, the so-called "City of Sadness," the new film is sympathetic to aging women fending for themselves in an urban society. It also features how young people deal with their everyday existence with resourcefulness. It evokes the poignancy of humanity in a transparent documentary style without sentimentalizing and reducing Tin Shui Wai to a site of mere tragedy, trauma and hysteria. The ordinary people in her film are courageous, compassionate and resilient.
Free tickets for the screening of "The Way We Are" (with English and Chinese subtitles) are now available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Information Counter of the Faculty of Arts Office, HKU, from 09:00-13:00, 14:00-17:45 (Monday to Friday) . The Meet-the-Artist session will be conducted in Cantonese. English interpretation will be provided upon request.
The VAP, with its focus on artists of international calibre, is the first of its kind at HKU. During their tenure at HKU, the artists will pursue projects and activities that culminate in workshops, screenings, exhibitions, and performances. Artists will have an opportunity to work closely with colleagues, practitioners, and students in the University and in the general community.
