HKU Admits 4 Students from Sichuan Earthquake-affected Areas
31 Jul 2008
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has admitted 4 students from the earthquake affected areas of Sichuan after having conducted interviews in Chengdu, Sichuan last weekend. One of them was offered a full scholarship of $140,000 a year, while the other 3 got scholarship of $50,000 each annually.
Together with the students admitted from other provinces/ municipalities earlier in the month, HKU will have 265 new undergraduate students from the Mainland in the coming academic year. Among them are six who received the highest scores in arts or science streams in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Yuannan and Heilongjiang.
HKU has received a record high of more than 12,011 applications from the Mainland this year, 988 more than the previous year. The deadline for quake-affected students was postponed, in line with the revised schedule of the National Joint College Entrance Examinations for them.
The University's remarkable global status, together with the international outlook of its faculty and student population, have led to continuous growth in international applicants and rising diversity in their countries of origin.
Other than the Mainland China, the University has received over 8,000 applications from 80 countries worldwide for undergraduate studies. The majority of them are top achievers in either national or international public examinations.
