First International Day of Peace on HKU Campus

September 21 is the International Day of Peace proclaimed by the United Nations (UN). All nations and people are urged to commemorate the Day as an opportunity to promote peaceful resolutions of conflicts and to honour cessation of hostilities. The Day provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of Peace on a shared date.
At UN Headquarters and different corners in the world, special ceremonies and activities will be held by people from all walks of life to promote and live out Peace.
The campus of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will also be a local venue for such meaningful endeavour this year. Members of the media are cordially invited to cover the activities of the Day, the details are:-

Venue: Loke Yew Hall, Main Building HKU
Celebration Ceremony ( 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. )
- Introduction of Peace Pole
- Observance of One-Minute Silence
- Ringing of Peace Bells

Interactive Forum ( 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. )
"Peace and Development - Ideals and Realities"
Peace and basic rights are among the important themes to be emphasized in the UN this year - the 60th anniversary of the International Declaration of Human Rights. In echo with the theme, the forum will focus on the role of international organisations in promoting peace and development. Speakers will also discuss how to promote peace education in Hong Kong and in the Mainland China.

- Mr John Sayer - Director-General, Oxfam Hong Kong
- Dr Simon Shen - Director of International Relations Research Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
- Professor James Tang - Professor, Department of Politics and Public Administration, HKU
The activities are jointly organized by HKU and the Rotary International District 3450 (Hong Kong, Macau & Mongolia), and supported by the Peace International Foundation.
