"Be One of Us! – HKU Family" -- HKU Information Day
18 Oct 2008
The Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions organised by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (October 18) attracted over 23,000 secondary school students, as well as their parents and teachers. They visited HKU campus to learn more about the various programmes it offered, to visit the facilities and hostels of the university, and to have a taste of various spectrum of university life. HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui launched the event with the theme "Be One of Us - HKU Family". In the presence of senior management members and various Deans, Professor Tsui led some 500 local and international students in an energetic Cheering Demonstration at the opening ceremony. "Cheering" is not only a culture and tradition of HKU halls for decades, but also a way of strengthening the solidarity spirit among hallmates and fellow students.
Today's opening ceremony was followed by admissions talks for local Form 6 students and Mainlanders hosted by Professor John Spinks, Chairman of the University Admissions Committee; Mr Henry Wai, Registrar; and Ms Isabella Wong, Director of China Affairs. Professor Cheng Kai-Ming, Senior Advisor to Vice-Chancellor, and Dr Albert Chau, Dean of Student Affairs, also shared with parents the likely challenges faced by their children in university.
Throughout the day, various faculties and departments have organised recruitment talks, interesting talks on varied academic topics and sharing sessions featuring graduates and current students, so as to enable prospective students to better understand the different programmes and the related career prospects.
Members of the public also had a taste of university and hall life, through joining guided tours of various student residential halls, laboratories, and teaching and learning facilities.
To increase public interest towards technology developments, members of the HKU family also organised a number of interactive hands-on activities for visitors, such as playing new XBOX games developed by HKU students, driving quay crane simulator, controlling robots, building timber bridges and combating computer crimes. There are also demonstrations and exhibitions of the latest technologies and research findings in various disciplines.
