China and the World in Mao’s Last Decade, 1966-1976
06 Jan 2009
Over thirty leading scholars from around the world will gather at the University of Hong Kong for two days of intensive discussion of the international impact of the Cultural Revolution on China's position in the world. A dozen top mainland academics, ranging from very senior scholars to young graduate students at the very beginning of their careers, will meet with colleagues from all around the world - Russia, Germany, Eastern Europe, Greece, India, the United States and Britain - to explore in depth the international ramifications of events in China during the last years of Mao Zedong.
This conference is the third major event in a series of Cold War conferences held at the University of Hong Kong since the mid-1990s. Participants will draw on a dazzling variety of previously untapped archival resources to illuminate the global implications of the Cultural Revolution years.
An opening round table session will feature Prof. Roderick MacFarquhar of Harvard University, the world's foremost historian of the Cultural Revolution; Bancroft Prize-winning international historian Prof. Odd Arne Westad, of the London School of Economics; Prof Chen Jian of Cornell University, a leading expert on China and the Cold War; and Prof. James G. Hershberg of George Washington University, founding director of the Cold War International History Project.
