HKU ranked No. 1 in Asia
11 May 2009
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to learn that the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, released today, has named HKU as the best university in the whole of Asia.
QS has been partnering with Times Higher Education Supplement to produce the annual World University Rankings. The University has consistently been ranked as the leading English-language university in Asia.
This is the first time that QS has compiled a set of specifically Asian rankings, using parameters that are considered to be more appropriate to institutions in this region.
These parameters include peer and recruiter review, the international research capabilities of the institution, teaching quality, internationalization of the staff and students, and overseas exchange opportunities for students, among others.
HKU had the best peer evaluations in Asia for research, and the best score in Asia for the number of citations of research papers, these being significant accolades for, and measure of, the quality of the research conducted in HKU. It also had the best figures in Asia for the internationalization of both academic staff and the student body.
HKU Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, said, "While this is obviously gratifying news for HKU, I am especially heartened and encouraged to see that three Hong Kong universities are regarded amongst the top institutions of higher learning in Asia."
"The ranking indicates that our strategic direction - with a focus on research and teaching excellence, and the internationalisation of our staff and student body - is being recognised particularly by other academics as well as employers. HKU will continue to strive to be internationally competitive and regionally relevant," remarked Professor Tsui.
