The University of Hong Kong held an induction day today (August 28) to welcome its students from around the world.
The university admitted 1,419 students from 61 countries and areas to its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes this year, among them 642 students come from the Mainland. The great diversity of students has added to an international and metropolitan campus at HKU.
The undergraduate programme alone admitted 113 students (excluding Mainland students), an increase of over 60 percent from last year. The new students come from 30 countries including India, Pakistan, Spain, Finland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Nepal, America and Britain. The number of exchange students this year is expected to be near 900, a 17 percent increase from last year.
The new students were taken on a full day orientation activities to familiarize with the facilities and services in the campus, and to get to know about the life style and culture of Hong Kong. HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, and Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange Professor J A Spinks, officiated at the event.
