Rhythmic Rapture: Percussion Concert with the University Artist Lung Heung-wing

HKU University Artist Lung Heung-wing, an internationally-acclaimed percussionist, will perform a programme of virtuosic works with his son Mark Lung, Chow Lap-tak, and Peter Fan. The concert includes pieces by Iannis Xenakis, Dave Samuels, and Steve Reich, as well as two multimedia works by local composers Mui Kwong-chiu and King-pan Ng. An innovative programme performed by superb musicians will make this event a memorable evening.

About the performers and HKU composers:
Lung Heung Wing - Percussion
Lung Heung-wing received his Doctoral degree in Music from West Virginia University, USA, his Master's degree in Music from the University of Reading, England, and diplomas and licentiates from the Juilliard School, USA, the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the UK, being a holder of five diplomas. Lung was the Principal Percussionist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for 19 years. He is a leading percussionist with numerous awards including: Instrumentalist of the Year (Hong Kong Artist Guild), Royal Overseas League Music Festival Competition Finalist Prize, David Stone Award and the Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award in 1999. In 2002 and 2007, he led 10,000 young percussionists in a performance to mark the fifth and the tenth anniversaries of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the events set a new Guinness world record. In 2007, he was awarded the "Secretary for Home Affair's Commendation" for his efforts in promoting the art of percussion music. He has teamed up with his son Mark since 1997, performing in North America, Europe, and throughout Asia. Currently, he is the University Artist of the University of Hong Kong.
Mark Lung - Percussion
Mark Lung is an undergraduate student of The University of Hong Kong. He studies Western percussion with his father Lung Heung-wing; timpani with Mr Alan Cumberland, Head of Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion of the HKAPA; and Chinese percussion with Mr Yim Hok Man, Principal Percussionist of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He has put on numerous performances in different countries with his father and featured as the soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in their Asian and European tour in February 2003, which won critical acclaim. The London Times and Guardian described his performance at the Barbican Hall, London, as "Remarkable, impossibly cute, with absolute precision, and engineering gestures with uncanny accuracy." He was invited to play with the well-known jazz-singer, Bobby McFerrin at the 2004 Hogn Kong Arts Festival and their performance was a critical and popular success. Mark was awarded the Hong Kong Soong Ching Ling Children's Palace Scholarship in percussion for three consecutive years, and was the youngest person ever to be awarded this scholarship. He was also the first and the only one in Hong Kong who had been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music (FRSM) in percussion.
King-pan Ng - Composer
King-pan NG, a musician who constantly alternates his role between a composer, songwriter, arranger, conductor and keyboard player, has been seeking the common ground between musical genres by breaking down their barriers.
Being a composer, King-pan often extends the creative process with other art forms. His commissions range from concert music, installation art, electro-acoustic pieces, film scoring to music for martial art and dance productions, had been performed by Orchestra Victoria, Song Company, Quangdong state folk orchestra, Taipei state folk orchestra, Chinese music virtuosi, Hong Kong music office youth choir and orchestras in countries including China, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Iceland, UK and US.
Graduated with Bachelor (first class honours) and Master of Music degree (2001/03) in the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Julian Yu and Brenton Broadstock, King-pan continued his studies on composition and orchestral conducting in Musikhogskolan i Piteå (Sweden) for a short period following Jan Sandstrom, Petter Sundkvist and Jan Ferm. In 2002, his orchestral work, Merah Putih received 3MBS Reading Australian National Composer Award while Autumn Rain and Wind Agonize Me So Much (for solo suona, san xian and chamber ensemble) was the winning composition of 2006 Tsang-Huei Hsu International Music Composition Award" (ethnic category) in Taiwan. King-pan was also the selected composer of various programs including MODART 2009 (Composer development program organized by Song Company, Australia), PRSF-CASH Creative Exchange (2008 London), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Composers' forum (2002).
The exploration also reaches to the pop music industry. Being a pianist and keyboard player for rock and pop concerts as well as TV shows, King-pan had performed in numerous countries including China, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, United State, Canada and England as in the live bands supporting Beyond, Sammi Cheng, Eason Chan, Hacken Lee etc. He also involves in the song-writing and arranging for various cd production of pop songs including Lao Xuan, Cai Qin, Josie Ho, Hacken Lee, Shino Lin etc.
Currently, King-pan is working on his PhD dissertation Counterpoint of Musical Styles: Tensive Music in the University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Dr. Chan Hing-yan.
Mui Kwong-chiu - Composer
Mui is an active Hong Kong composer. He has created a rich portfolio of music compositions comprising of works of different musical genres, and has been composing upon commissions for various renowned musicians, performance groups radio and television stations as well as music festivals. Mui graduated from the Music Department of the University of Hong Kong and received his MPhil and PhD degrees in the area of music composition. He also graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University majoring in films study, and Hong Kong Music Institute majoring in music composition. Currently, he is the Council Director of Hong Kong Composers' Guild, the Honorary Composer in Residence of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association, the adjudicator of Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival, the advisor of Tien Ma Chorus and Yuen Long Children's Choir. He also contributes articles in music study for education purposes published by Education and Manpower Bureau.
