04 Dec 2009
Around 150 local and international academics and educational professionals attended the one-day international conference on "Managing Human Capital in World Cities" which was held at the University of Hong Kong today (December 4). More than 20 renowned educational theoreticians and practitioners from Nylonkong - New York, London and Hong Kong, and Asia shared their views on managing human capital in the world cities.
The Financial Secretary of The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Honourable Mr John Tsang Chun-wah, delivered a luncheon keynote speech for the Conference talk about how Hong Kong can strengthen collaboration with cities like London and New York to provide effective education tailored to the rapidly changing times. "The recent financial crisis has highlighted the vulnerability of our economies in this era of globalisation. It has also reaffirmed the need to nurture talent to cope with the challenges of a more inter-connected world. The best way to achieve this is by embracing the spirit of co-operation between cities and nations that has proved critical in overcoming the economic difficulties", said Mr Tsang.
The Conference provides a platform to enhance the international academic exchange and promote educational research and collaboration. Speakers from three main world cities inspired participants on promotion of human capital, nurturing and attracting talents, education reform and student learning. Speakers from different parts of Asia including Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan also demonstrated the unique Asian experiences in education to echo to their sharing.
Being part of the Managing World Cities International Conference series, this Conference is co-organized by The Faculty of Social Sciences, The Hong Kong Educational Research Association (HKERA), The Hong Kong Institute of Education; Faculty of Education, the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and the Information Services Department, HKSAR Government. This is also an academic conference to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of HKERA.
