State Councilor Liu Yandong visits HKU

Madam Liu Yandong, Member of the State Council, visited the University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (December 6). HKU Chairman of Council Dr. the Honourable Leong Che-hung, HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, and HKU Dean of Medicine Professor Sum-ping Lee, welcomed Madam Liu for her visit to the University.
Those accompanying Ms Liu included the Honourable Mr Michael Suen Ming-yeung, Secretary for Education; and Dr the Honourable York Chow Yat-ngok, Secretary for Food and Health.
During her visit, Madam Liu toured the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine Campus, and was briefed on the history, achievements and development plan of the University by Professor Tsui. She also visited the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Genome Research Centre.
Madam Liu described HKU as the oldest university in the territory with immense impact, and outstanding achievements. She said the University, with a wealth of experience in grooming talents and pioneering research, is well placed to support the nation's endeavour of improving education standards and acquiring advanced international education concepts. She also expressed her wish to see a closer cooperation of higher education between the Mainland and Hong Kong to raise the quality of education of the nation.
The University presented a chair which is crafted in the style of Ming Dynasty furniture with the University's motto "Sapientia et Virtus" to Madam Liu. The chair is an exclusive gift for supporters of the University's research endeavors and on this occasion as a token of thanks to Madam Liu for her support to higher education and HKU. Madam Liu presented a precious set of Yongle Dadian, China's encyclopedia dating back to the Ming Dynasty, to the Libraries of HKU.
HKU has been in close collaborations with Mainland organisations in many areas, which include joint programmes with Mainland universities, and operation of two State Key Laboratories. The number of Mainland students admitted to HKU under various programmes is also on the increase in recent years and the University is admitting very high quality students from the Mainland.
