Pearl for the World [Phase 2 Exhibition] Press Conference and Open Exhibition
28 Dec 2009
香江永綠‧Pearl for the World project brings forward a generic sustainable development framework for the entire HKSAR for the coming 50 years and beyond. The project particularly addresses Hong Kong's ever increasing population which will reach 8.6 million by 2050, as predicted by UN Population Reports of 2008.
The first phase exhibition of the project was held in October 2009 to present to members of the public sustainable development plans of the West Kowloon Park and cultural facilities, and eight marine and land parks in the city centre. The second phase exhibition will be held at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) from 30 December 2009 to 2 January 2010 to extend the scope of design to cover the entire Kowloon and the northern part of HK Island, and subsequently Hong Kong at large to meet the needs of population increase and socio-economic developments in the next 50 to 100 years.
The proposals include 1,700 hectares of marine and land parks on the invaluable reclaimed land of the harbour front surrounding the Victoria Harbour, and their concurrent development into interlinked underground cities; and large traffic hubs at strategic locations near the portals of vehicular tunnels to help solve traffic congestions, and air and noise pollution problems in the city.
Visitors are invited to take a tour around a map shaping a future Hong Kong with new land use concepts, underground cities, large marine and land parks, and green links, and to view exhibits which include a model of "HKSAR Square" at the Central district, models of development around Kowloon Park and the clock tower area, and a sunlight design of West Kowloon cultural district, illustrated with display panels, videos and books. An innovative HELIODON TOOL developed by HKU will be used to simulate sunlight and its directions at different time in different seasons at the various ICONIC sundials at the city centre.
The exhibition is the collaborative efforts of alumni, teachers, and students of HKU Faculty of Architecture, and members of the Hong Kong Cycling Alliance. It is also the first event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Main Building of HKU on 16 March 1910.
Media representatives are cordially invited to a press conference for a preview of the exhibits. Professor K P Cheung, Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture and principal investigator of the project, will give a briefing on the blueprint. Details are as follows:
