Approximately 80-100 researchers and practitioners from over 10 countries, including North America, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia, will attend a four-day conference at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on networking, learning and information exchange in the emerging field of digital forensics.
Mr. Clarence To Chun-wai, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) of the Hong Kong Police, will give an opening speech on "e-Crime and Digital Forensics in Hong Kong" at the opening session on 4 January 2010 (Monday).
"Digital forensics" is the scientific study of the processes involved in acquiring, preserving, examining, analyzing and presenting all forms of electronic evidence. It is envisaged there will be a continued increase in the demand of technology crime investigation and digital forensics in Hong Kong and mainland China. According to the latest IDC study commissioned by the Business Software Alliance, a Copyright Alliance member, the privacy level of China (including Hong Kong) is 80%, total financial costs involved in combating the crime was US$6.677 billion in 2008, which is the highest in the world.
The Conference will cover areas of fraud investigations, advanced forensic techniques, live forensics, legal issues and privacy, evidence storage and analysis, and evidence collection, and in particular digital forensics research in China and issues facing digital and multimedia forensic science. It is organized in partnership with IFIP Working Group 11.9 on Digital Forensics, which is an active international community of scientists, engineers and practitioners dedicated to advancing the state of the art of research and practice in the emerging field of digital forensics, and the HKU Center for Information Security and Cryptography. The Conference is supported by the Information Security and Forensics Society (ISFS) of Hong Kong.
