The University of Hong Kong’s response regarding media enquiries about HKU student Christina Chan Hau-man’s case
14 Jan 2010
Responding to enquiries by the media, HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui says that HKU encourages students to actively take part in current affairs, and respects and enables free expression of different opinions. HKU will also ensure freedom of speech and protects students from unnecessary interference. When students need help, the University would do its best to provide advice and assistance. The University expects students to express their opinions in a rational and peaceful way. However, students are adults. While the University respects their freedoms, they have to be responsible for their acts.
Regarding a question by the media on whether the University will take any disciplinary action against Christina Chan, Professor Tsui does not want to comment at this point in time as no charges have been laid against her yet by the police. In case a student is convicted of a criminal offence, the University's Statutes provide a clearly-defined set of disciplinary regulations to handle the matter.
Professor Tsui reiterates that the University will provide assistance to any student who needs it. The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Albert Chau, called Christina Chan earlier to express the University's concern and enquire if she needed any help from the University.
