Professor Celia Hoyles CANOTTA Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Faculty of Education, HKU
05 Mar 2010
Knowledge transfer has been a key milestone of the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. It is realized by our engagement in multiple partnerships with professionals and community both locally and internationally. One of the initiatives is marked by the visit of Professor Celia Hoyles, Professor of Mathematics Education, Institute of Education, University of London, under the scheme of CANOTTA Distinguished Visiting Fellowship in Mathematics Education 2010.
Professor Hoyles is a leading mathematics educator in the United Kingdom, who has devoted most of her life to finding new ways of getting students excited about the subject, raising teachers' teaching quality and giving mathematics a higher public profile. She was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to mathematics education. In the same year, she was chosen as the first recipient of the extremely prestigious Hans Freudenthal medal, in recognition of her cumulative programme of research. She took up the position of the U.K. Government's Chief Adviser for Mathematics for 3 years. For a few years, Professor Hoyles co-presented a popular TV mathematics quiz show, Fun and Games that was shown prime time on Yorkshire TV (now ITV 1).
In light of Professor Hoyles' influential capacity in relation to mathematics education in the United Kingdom and internationally, it is our honour that she will deliver a public lecture, share with school principals, EDB officers and prominent local mathematics educators in a formal dialogue session, and also an informal one with senior forms' secondary students.
