HKU Cantonese Opera Education Project
30 Mar 2010
The Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research of the Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong, will hold a press conference tomorrow (March 31) to announce new plans to further incorporate Cantonese Opera into the secondary school curriculum
The centre introduced the "Integrating Cantonese Opera with New Senior Secondary Chinese Language Curriculum and Assessment: A Seed Project" in 2006 seeking to incorporate Cantonese Opera into the secondary school curriculum, specifically the Chinese Language, Chinese Literature and Liberal Studies. The goal is to guide the students to appreciate and respect the culture of Cantonese Opera, and in turn to help preserve the traditional art form. The project has been funded by the Yam Pak Charitable Foundation, the HKU Culture & Humanities Fund and Cantonese Opera Development Fund.
By 2009/10, the project completed its third phase with 11 partnering schools, benefiting more than 11,000 participants. The book "Legend of Purple Hairpin" Classroom: Constructing the Interactive Learning Platform of Cantonese Opera in Education《紫釵記教室──搭建粵劇教育的互動學習平台》was also published to provide reference materials on Cantonese Opera.
In 2010, the project will extend its scope to encompass curriculum development, teacher training, teaching materials, pedagogy and evaluation, research, publication and exchange, focusing on four areas of (i) Integrating The Biography of Leung Sing-boh into Liberal Studies subjects of secondary schools; (ii) Integrating the art of Cantonese Opera into the General Education of HKU and the Aesthetic Development under Other Learning Experience of the new senior secondary curriculum; (iii) Teaching and action research of Cantonese Opera Scriptwriting; and (iv) Traditional bamboo shed Cantonese Opera education and publication.
