International Media Conference:Reporting New Realities in Asia and the Pacific at the University of Hong Kong

The University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre is hosting a major international media conference, co-sponsored by the East-West Center's Asia Pacific Center for Journalists.This conference provides a unique opportunity to see more than 200 journalists and major movers and shakers from all over Asia, America and the Pacific come together to look at the shifting power dynamics in the world's most dynamic region - the Asia Pacific, and how China's growth on the world stage is changing economic landscapes.
Dr. Roland Chin, Chair of the Research Grants Council in Hong Kong will be officiating the start of the conference with an opening address, at 9:00 a.m. on April 26, Monday at Wang Gungwu Theatre. Hu Shuli, Editor-in-Chief of Caixin Media, a Beijing-based multi-media group will deliver a luncheon talk starting 11:45 a.m. on April 27 at the Loke Yew Hall. Hu is highly regarded for founding the acclaimed financial publication, Caijing Magazine, in the late nineties. Hu was called the most powerful commentator in China by The Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal cited her as one of the "Ten Women to Watch" in Asia.
Hu's talk will be streamed live online starting at 11:45am April 27, Hong Kong time at EWC50.org/mediaconference2010. Following the speech, a recording of the stream will remain on the site for viewing at any time
Other key speakers include Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General and Dr. Kurt Campbell, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State. Dr Pitsuwan was a journalist then longtime Thai politician and was considered a serious contender to succeed Kofi Annan as UN Secretary General. Dr. Pitsuwan will speak at 12:15 p.m on April 26 at Loke Yew Hall on the topic entitled: "ASEAN as the Chief Architect in the Evolving Regional Architecture in Asia-Pacific." Dr. Pitsuwan's speech will be streamed live online at 12:15 p.m. Hong Kong time at EWC50.org/mediaconference2010 . Following the speech, a recording of the stream will remain on the site for viewing at any time.
Dr. Kurt Campbell, an American diplomat and academic, was previously the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of the Center for a New American Security, a U.S. national security think tank. Dr. Campbell will deliver a talk about "American Engagement and Asia" also on April 26 at 8:00 p.m. at La Dynastie Banquet Hall, Shop 102, The Arcade, 100 Cyberport Road, Hong Kong. Dr Campbell is available for a QA session with the media following the talk.
