Education Seminar Series 2010:“Talking Mathematics with Parents” by Professor Frederick Leung

The Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong will be organizing a series of seminars examining the various subjects taught in schools nowadays, including languages, liberal studies, mathematics and other subjects. The seminars are intended for parents and the focus will be on the role parents are playing in the rapidly changing teaching and learning environment. A series of seminar talks will be given by our teachers who are leading researchers in the relevant subjects. The first seminar will be given by Professor Frederick Leung and the topic is "Talking Mathematics with Parents" - What should I know and do about my child's mathematics education?
At the seminar, the following issues will be discussed:
- How can I help my child to do better in mathematics? Practice makes perfect?
- What should I do to help my child develop an interest in mathematics?
- Should I send my child to do supplementary courses like Kumon?
- How is the mathematics children learning today different from the mathematics we learned when we were school students? What is Dynamic Geometry?
- what is the use of the mathematics that children learn from their schools?
- How are the Hong Kong students doing in international mathematics assessment?
Professor Leung is currently taking up the positions as professor in mathematics education of the Faculty of Education, and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, the University of Hong Kong. He was winners of Outstanding Researcher Award and Outstanding Research Students Supervisor Award of the Faculty of Education in 2006 and 2008 respectively. Professor Leung was the Fulbright Scholar in 2003. His research interests include Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Hong Kong's education policy. He is the first person from Hong Kong who has been elected to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) and a member of the Standing Committee of the International Association for the Evaluation of Academic Achievement (IEA).
