Geographical Distribution and Demographic Changes of Suicide in Hong Kong
08 Sep 2010
World Suicide Prevention Day 2010
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated the global mortality rate of 16.0 per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds. Statistically suicide rates in the Western Pacific Region have been steadily rising. As one of the metropolitan cities in this region, Hong Kong has recorded 970 suicide cases or 13.8 per 100,000 in 2009 (Coroner's Court, 2010). Recent years' data analysis show some significant changes of suicide cases in geographical distribution and demographic changes. Research and resources are still limited and awaited to be developed. Stay connected becomes essential mental health empowerment and more community efforts are needed to be encouraged.
On World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), September 10, 2010, the theme "Many Faces, Many Places: Suicide Prevention across the World" offers us a broad perspective for suicide prevention in a connected way. Remarking on the WSPD this year, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP), The University of Hong Kong is pleased to invite press members to attend the press conference. CSRP Director, also the Vice-President of International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), Prof. Paul S. F. Yip, will announce latest local and international findings on suicide and discuss opportunities and challenges of suicide prevention in the region.
