John Greenwood to Speak on the Future of the Hong Kong Dollar as China Internationalises the RMB

Organised by the School of Economics and Finance of the Faculty of Business and Economics, a lecture titled "The Future of the Hong Kong Dollar as China Internationalises the RMB" will be held on October 20, Wednesday at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), featuring Dr. John Greenwood, Chief Economist of INVESCO.
In this lecture, Dr. Greenwood will shed light on issues such as fixed, managed and floating currency regimes for large economies versus small, open economies, Hong Kong's experience of fixed and floating exchange rates and the problems with managed exchanged rates and trade weighted or other baskets. He will also discuss the implications of China's growth and liberalization for the Hong Kong currency system as well as current cyclical issues and long term prospects.
As editor of Asian Monetary Monitor, Dr. Greenwood proposed a currency board scheme for stabilizing the Hong Kong dollar in 1983 that is still in operation today. An economic adviser to the Hong Kong Government (1992-3), he has been a member of the Committee on Currency Board Operations of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority since 1998.
