HKU Information Day 2010
The University of Hong Kong will hold its Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2010 on October 30, 2010 (Saturday) from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Information Day will kick off at an opening ceremony with HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui to lead the audience with Mr. Makha Diop, a veteran drummer, to ingeniously create a rhythmic and energetic performance. The whole day event aims to showcase the University's activities, programmes and facilities to the public, particularly secondary school students, teachers and parents. Teaching departments and halls of residence are open to the public for a better understanding of the campus life at HKU.

Global Lounge Cultural Fair
The Global Lounge of HKU will hold a cultural fair on Information Day. There will be three main booths at the Fair: Food, Games and Costume Booths. Participants will be able to try a lot of different foods and costumes around the world, play different traditional games from various countries, and view performances.

Seminar: Planetary Boundaries: A safe operating space for humanity in an era of rapid global environmental change"
The Planetary Boundaries framework is an attempt to respond to the globalization of environment and development by providing a new approach to global sustainability. Planetary boundaries for key Earth system processes associated with the risk of undesirable non-linear change are identified and quantified. The concept lays the groundwork for shifting the approach to governance and management toward the estimation of the safe space for human development.
Speaker: Professor Johan Rockström, Professor in natural resource management, Stockholm University, and Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

Screening of Vincent Chui's Three Narrow Gates and Book Talk

People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison delegates to visit HKU and students
Major General Wang Junli, deputy commander of People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison will lead about 80 soldiers and officials to visit the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and exchange with students. The delegates will be taken on a campus tour, attend public lectures, and play a friendly basketball match and have lunch with students.

Seminar: Critical Role of Families in Reducing Risk & Promoting Well-being for LGBT Youth & Young Adults
Dr. Caitlin Ryan will present the first research-based family model to reduce risk and promote well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth in the context of their families. Her research shows that family acceptance promotes well-being and helps protect against risk, while family rejection predicts serious health and mental health problems for LGBT young people, including illegal drug use, suicide, HIV and homelessness. This session will discuss FAP research and approaches for increasing family and caregiver support for LGBT youth and young adults.
